SBM Service Center

Keeping a vessel in top condition is a challenge for all sailors. Today’s pleasure boat is complex; few can master all the nuances. Shelter Bay Service can help find the answer, get the parts, and do the dirty work. Not all skills are on tap but we have technicians capable of solving tricky as well as mundane issues.

Our maintenance team is growing in capability and scope under the guidance of Edwin Chavez (USCGA 1995). His leadership and training program has made a big difference. We are also investing heavily in our facilities to provide the necessary hardware support.

A new workshop building is up; the covered work area is already in service painting a 65 ft. powerboat. Soon there will be dedicated shop spaces for carpentry, welding, rigging, mechanical, electronic and electrical, AC/refrigeration. Our sail loft, a converted pre-WWII theater building, provides space to assist both small and large canvas and sail repair projects.

The tasks listed below shows the range of services we provide. More specialized projects may also be within our expanding capabilities so whatever your project is, be sure to give us a call.

Cabinetwork and carpentry: including hull and structural repairs, interior and exterior finish work.

Fiberglass and other laminates: we can do everything in glass and the basics in carbon. If high tech we will arrange for the most sophisticated materials and source the best skilled technicians.

Painting: we have weather protected space and the skilled people to do first rate work. With Shrink Wrapping we can go a step further and provide a climate controlled environment.

Welding and metal work: our shop is well equipped for the basics. Our metal shop partners are ready to deal with everything from 1/2 inch plate to yacht quality finished stainless.

Mechanical: our team can take on all the nasty little chores, pumps, fuel polishing, cutlass bearing and valves as well as major overhauls and high tech repairs.

Electrical: alternators and starters as well as the AC and DC circuits and systems on your vessel, generators and switch panels, we can find the answer.

Sails, canvas and running rigging: let us know what you need and we’ll get  it done.

Standing rigging: now that Panama has a good supply of wire rope and equipment we can respond quickly to many urgent rigging issues.

On a semi-final and important note (!): having time is critical to get many jobs completed properly. During our peak transit season at times there is considerable pressure to get things completed yesterday. If you are in a rush communicate with our yard office as early as you can , so we can schedule the work effectively and realistically.
